Women’s AFCON Host Status in Jeopardy as Morocco’s Commitment Uncertain. Casablanca, Morocco — Less than two weeks before the scheduled start of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), doubts over Morocco’s readiness to host the tournament have emerged.
The uncertainty has prompted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to pledge that the matter is being addressed urgently, with a clarification expected in the coming days.
The event, set to commence on 17 March, is facing potential complications as Morocco has reportedly warned that it may struggle to meet the required timelines due to heavy scheduling and ongoing stadium renovation projects. Despite this, CAF president Patrice Motsepe has ruled out any possibility of altering the dates, emphasizing that the tournament serves as a qualifying event for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The situation is creating an unprecedented logistical vacuum for the qualifying teams.
South Africa has stepped forward, indicating its readiness to host the tournament if needed, with its sport minister criticizing Morocco for the late uncertainty. Officials commented on the matter.
Last November, the continental football body expanded the women’s tournament to include 16 teams, a significant change from the previous format.
Nigeria currently holds the title as the defending champion, having defeated Morocco 3-2 in the final last year.
The AFCON’s uncertain hosting status is a significant concern for both the participating teams and football enthusiasts across the continent. With preparations at a critical juncture, the fate of the tournament remains in the balance as Moroccan authorities and the CAF work to resolve the issue.
Further details are expected to emerge in the coming days as the situation develops.
