JOHANNESBURG — The Democratic Alliance (DA) is set to witness a dynamic leadership race as it convenes its 2026 Federal Congress, following the departure of John Steenhuisen. With former leader Helen Zille’s withdrawal from contention, the contest has intensified, attracting a surprising new entrant: Sibusiso Dyonase, the Sedibeng Caucus leader.
Dyonase, a former Mr. South Africa finalist, has brought a fresh perspective to the race, leveraging his background in grassroots politics and governance. Raised in the Vaal region by a single mother, Dyonase’s journey from activist to caucus leader is a testament to his commitment to the party.
Since joining the DA in 2010, Dyonase has ascended through the ranks, serving as the Public Relations Councillor in Sedibeng, and later as the DA Caucus Deputy Chairperson and Deputy DA Youth Regional Chairperson. His current role as the DA Caucus Leader in Sedibeng District highlights his dedication to the party’s cause.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Dyonase is undeterred, stating, “I have trained myself for this moment.” He emphasizes the importance of unity within the party and the collaborative efforts required to enhance service delivery for South Africans.
The DA Federal Council’s election includes Dyonase as a candidate for various positions, underscoring his emergence as a credible contender for the top leadership role within the DA.
