William Rutta, CEO of Bukoba Travel & Tours, emphasized the importance of first impressions. “When travelers arrive by bus or car, the first billboard they see suggests danger,” Rutta. “How can someone stop to eat, buy gifts, or book a hotel room after seeing that?
” He advocates for a shift towards billboards that showcase the region’s natural wonders, such as Rubondo Island’s elephants and golden beaches, with a welcoming message that inspires exploration and spending. Once a region addressing one of Tanzania’s highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates, Kagera has seen significant progress in public health.
The region’s leaders are now advocating for a balanced communication strategy, maintaining HIV awareness while promoting tourism and investment through prime advertising spaces.
Advertising, according to Rutta, is not just decoration but infrastructure for growth.
