Maputo, Mozambique — April 15, 2026 — A comprehensive analysis by the REACH Initiative has identified Mozambique’s northern provinces, particularly Cabo Delgado and Nampula, as experiencing critical gaps in essential systems required to sustain life and prevent lifethreatening conditions. This analysis, covering the period from August to October 2025, reveals a complex tapestry of deprivations affecting the region’s most vulnerable populations. Food Security and Health Woes — The report highlights Macomia, Nangade, and Meluco as areas of particular concern due to the convergence of severe deprivations across multiple systems, including food security, water access, living conditions, and health services.
Despite recent reductions in conflict, enabling the return of around 700,000 individuals, the situation remains dire for many, especially internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Cabo Delgado. Vulnerability Across Demographics — In Macomia, the analysis indicates that all three population groups—IDPs, non-displaced, and returnees—face heightened lifethreatening vulnerabilities.
In Nangade and Meluco, the non — displaced and returnee populations initially appeared at higher risk, but the displacement of nearly 8,000 people in Nangade following NSAG attacks suggests that conditions may have worsened significantly since the analysis period. Health System Weakening — The analysis also notes limitations in available health outcome data, particularly in nutrition and morbidity, which constrained the ability to fully assess mortality risk.
The weakened health system and poor living conditions in IDP sites further compound the challenges faced by the affected populations. Addressing the Crisis — While the Mozambican government and humanitarian organizations are working to address the crisis, the scale of the challenge is immense.
The REACH Initiative’s findings underscore the urgent need for additional resources and support to mitigate suffering and prevent further escalations in the food insecurity situation. Mozambique’s acute needs analysis serves as a stark reminder of the complex challenges facing the country’s most vulnerable populations. It is imperative that international attention and support continue to be directed towards these critical areas, ensuring that the essential systems required for survival and well-being are strengthened and sustained.
