LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have bolstered their strategic partnership with the unveiling of expanded areas of collaboration. The agreement was formalized during the Eighth Nigeria-EU Ministerial Dialogue, co-chaired by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
In the communiqué following the dialogue, both entities underscored their shared commitment to advancing a stable, prosperous, and sustainable global order, emphasizing the value of their friendship, mutual respect, and shared values amidst geopolitical challenges.
The EU’s Global Gateway strategy, a platform aimed at sustainable infrastructure, digital transformation, and economic development, has been instrumental in this renewed partnership. In 2025, the EU allocated €73 million in grants to projects such as digital infrastructure and support against gender-based violence. Additionally, €555 million in loans from the European Investment Bank supported SMEs in healthcare, digital services, and agri-food sectors.
Both parties also committed to enhancing investments and collaboration in renewable energy and clean hydrogen energy sectors, recognizing Nigeria’s potential in these areas. They also highlighted the need for resilience and adaptation efforts, especially for communities affected by environmental pressures in the Lake Chad Basin.
On the security front, the EU acknowledged Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting democracy, peace, and stability in West Africa. The dialogue emphasized the importance of cooperation against terrorism, intelligence sharing, and the prevention of terrorism financing, alongside supporting regional security mechanisms like the ECOWAS security architecture.
Looking forward, the two sides agreed to continue their trade and investment partnership, with Nigeria benefiting from the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) for preferential access to European markets. The upcoming 10th Nigeria-EU Business Forum in Lagos on June 25, 2026, is set to further enhance economic ties.
