NEWF and E·CO Announce Partnership for €5,000 Grants to Support Visual Storytelling Across Ibero-America and Africa BODY: Sodwana Bay, South Africa – NEWF (Nature Environment and Wildlife Filmmakers) and E·CO / Encounter of Collectives have initiated a partnership aimed at fostering creative and environmental storytelling across Ibero-America and Africa.
The collaboration will provide 12 interdisciplinary collectives with production grants of €5,000 each to explore themes of time, territory, memory, and ancestral knowledge through visual storytelling.
The selected projects will not only receive financial support but also benefit from mentorship and production assistance from leading visual storytelling practitioners.
The initiative culminates in an in — person encounter and residency at NEWF’s eKhaya centre in Sodwana Bay, South Africa, offering a unique space for artistic, environmental, and social inquiry. E·CO, an international program supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), aims to reshape how communities perceive their past, present, and future through visual narratives. This partnership with NEWF, a part of the National Geographic Society’s Africa Refocused program, underscores the importance of diverse storytelling perspectives.
The grants are open to collectives from both regions and are expected to receive a rigorous selection process, prioritizing projects that demonstrate cultural sensitivity, innovation, and social impact.
The selected projects are anticipated to be announced in early June, with the residency and encounter scheduled for later in the year. This partnership is seen as a significant step in amplifying underrepresented voices in storytelling about Africa’s environment and natural heritage, fostering a network of collaborative opportunities that will benefit both cultural and environmental sectors in Ibero-America and Africa.
