Maiduguri, Nigeria — Multiple people killed, injured after bombs explode in Nigeria: officials. Maiduguri, Nigeria — At least three bombs exploded in northeastern Nigeria’s Borno state on Monday night, leaving numerous people dead and injured, according to emergency services officials.
The blasts occurred in Maiduguri, the state capital, where the Nigerian jihadi group Boko Haram has been conducting an insurgency for over a decade.
The explosions took place at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and two local markets, known as Post Office and the Monday Market, Sirajo Abdullahi, head of operations at Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Maiduguri, told The Associated Press. “There are casualties and they are still managing the causalities at the hospital,” Abdullahi. “We can’t give the actual figure until we count.
” No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombings, but the Nigerian military stated in a statement earlier that it had repelled attacks by suspected Islamic militants in the early hours of Monday on the outskirts of Maiduguri. Boko Haram and its factions have been responsible for several attacks targeting Nigeria’s military bases in the northeast this month. Eyewitnesses reported that over 200 people were injured and receiving care in the hospital’s accident and emergency department.
“Many lost their lives at the scene immediately after the bomb exploded,” Bagoni Alkali, an eyewitness, told The Associated Press. “This attack’s been one of the deadliest in Maiduguri in years. ” Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno state strongly condemned the explosions, expressing his thoughts and prayers with the families of the victims and those injured.
He called on residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movement or activity to security agencies.
The incident marks a rare attack in Maiduguri, which has seen fewer bombings in recent years following military operations.
The ongoing security crisis in Nigeria’s north has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and led to a humanitarian crisis in the region.
Further details are expected as the situation develops.
