Agadir — Moroccan and Spanish military officials gathered in Rabat on Wednesday to discuss and strategize on bilateral defense cooperation, setting the stage for joint initiatives spanning 2026-2027. The Royal Armed Forces (FAR) announced the meeting of the Moroccan-Spanish Joint Military Commission, which aimed to evaluate the advancement of defense ties between the two nations over the past year.
During the meeting, officials examined a range of collaborative efforts, including joint training programs, personnel exchanges, and combined military exercises across land, air, and naval forces. The focus was also on enhancing interoperability and operational alignment between the two forces, particularly in response to emerging security challenges in the western Mediterranean.
The commission agreed upon a roadmap for the next five years, emphasizing a surge in joint activities and strategic engagement in areas of mutual interest. This strategic plan is designed to bolster military cooperation and contribute to regional stability.
The Moroccan — Spanish military collaboration is rooted in a long-standing security partnership, marked by years of close coordination between the Moroccan General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) and Spanish security services. The DGST has been commended for its role in fostering trust, intelligence sharing, and counter-terrorism operations that have dismantled extremist groups in both countries. Since 2014, over 30 joint actions have demonstrated the depth and evolution of their security alliance in the western Mediterranean. The recent dismantling of an Islamic State-linked extremist cell in March 2026, a joint operation by Moroccan and Spanish security services, is a testament to this ongoing collaboration.
