CITY, South Africa — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H. E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has warmly congratulated the newly elected President and Members of the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), emphasizing the importance of the election’s orderly and transparent conduct.
The election, held in Midrand, Republic of South Africa, saw H. E. Fateh Boutbig of Algeria elected as President, with the Bureau representing all five regions of the continent.
Youssouf paid tribute to the outgoing President, H. E. Fortune Charumbira, for his dedicated service and contributions to the AU.
He noted that the elections reflect the Member States’commitment to democracy, rule of law, and inclusive representation, as enshrined in the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
The incoming Bureau, Youssouf stated, represents a significant step forward for the PAP as it enters a new phase. He expressed full confidence in the incoming leadership and called for the discharge of their responsibilities with integrity, unity of purpose, and commitment to Pan-African ideals.
The AUC Chairperson also highlighted the Commission’s support for ongoing institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the effectiveness and legislative authority of the PAP. These reforms are critical to enhancing the Parliament’s role within the AU’s governance architecture and its contribution to the realization of Agenda 2063.
The PAP, established as a legislative assembly of the AU, is tasked with promoting the integration, development, and prosperity of the continent. It serves as a voice for the African people, focusing on representing the interests of the African population and promoting peace, security, and sustainable development on the continent.
As the PAP prepares for its new phase, the incoming leadership will be tasked with advancing the institution’s role within the AU’s governance structure while addressing the diverse needs and aspirations of African citizens.
The support of the AU Commission is crucial in this endeavor, as it seeks to enhance the PAP’s effectiveness and its contribution to Africa’s development agenda.
