Johannesburg — Magasela Mzobe has resigned as president of the MK Party, a move that exposes deepening rifts linked to former president Jacob Zuma and throws the six-month-old movement into turmoil only weeks before the 29 May national and provincial elections. Party officials confirmed the exit late on Tuesday.
Local media reports say tensions centred on strategy and the extent of Zuma’s influence inside the organisation. Mzobe’s departure follows friction over candidate lists for the May ballots, although official statements have not given precise reasons for the split. Zuma, who fronts the party’s campaign posters, has not yet commented on the leadership change.
An interim structure will meet within 48 hours to appoint an acting president and steady volunteers in KwaZulu-Natal, the party’s main base, spokespeople told local outlets. Election officials have not altered the 10 April deadline for finalising ballot papers, and insiders insist the party will still appear on voting slips.
