MONROVIA, Liberia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has appointed Jonathan K. Weedor, a former National Elections Commission (NEC) Commissioner, as the new Chairman of the NEC. The move follows the sudden resignation of Davidetta Browne-Lansanah and aims to stabilize Liberia’s electoral process as midterm senatorial elections approach within the next 18 months and preparations for the 2029 general elections continue.
Weedor, who served as a NEC Commissioner from 2004 to 2020, brings extensive experience in managing election operations, including overseeing human resources, finance, and procurement. His academic background, with a master’s degree in development studies and a bachelor’s degree in forestry, underscores his technical expertise and institutional knowledge.
The appointment of Weedor is seen as a strategic effort to restore stability and rebuild trust within the NEC. His deep understanding of the institution is expected to help address administrative tensions and enhance the credibility of electoral processes in Liberia. His past involvement in election observation missions across the region also positions him as a credible figure in international electoral circles.
As Liberia’s electoral landscape evolves, Weedor faces the challenge of consolidating recent reforms and addressing structural weaknesses within the NEC. His leadership will be crucial in ensuring transparency, credibility, and dispute resolution in upcoming elections, which are closely monitored by international partners.
