In Johannesburg, South Africa, the tragic death of cyclist Landon le Grange, 61, following a collision with a taxi driver has ignited a wave of public outrage. The incident, which occurred recently, resulted in le Grange’s death in the hospital on Tuesday. The Pedal Power Association has described the event as a predictable tragedy that reflects a broader national crisis involving unsafe road conditions and insufficient enforcement of traffic laws.
The association, noting that the incident has shocked Cape Town residents, emphasized that it is not an isolated incident. It pointed out that the pattern of preventable harm is driven by factors such as dangerous overtaking, excessive speed, distracted driving, failure to yield, and alcohol-impaired driving. Speed is identified as the leading factor, with research indicating that a cyclist hit at speeds over 45 km/h has less than a 50 percent chance of survival.
The Pedal Power Association highlighted the lack of enforcement of the existing one — metre passing law for cyclists in the Western Cape. Despite the law being on paper, it has never been successfully prosecuted, rendering it ineffective in protecting cyclists. The association is now calling for immediate action from authorities, including stricter speed limits on mixed-use roads and visible, consistent law enforcement.
Furthermore, the association is urging the South African Police Service (SAPS) to prioritize offenses such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, and drunk driving and to ensure that offenders are prosecuted. Infrastructure improvements, such as wider shoulders, better signage, and interim cycle lanes, are also recommended. The association warned that not all cycle lanes are equal and called for continuous, physically protected cycling routes.
The Victoria Road fatality, according to the association, is a tragic outcome of a national system that fails to protect vulnerable road users. The call is for a shift from a car-centric environment that prioritizes motor vehicle accommodation to one that respects and protects cyclists while ensuring responsible driving practices.
