Mogadishu Port Transforms into Regional Logistics Hub. Mogadishu, Somalia — The Mogadishu Port Authority (MPA) has marked a significant milestone in its development, emerging as a key regional transshipment hub following a record-breaking performance in January 2026. This transformation, which elevates Mogadishu from a final destination to a transit node, was marked by the launch of a direct service between Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the Somali capital by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
The MSC Silver II arrived in Mogadishu, successfully discharging transshipment cargo that was then loaded onto the MSC Malin II. This operation signifies the beginning of transit activities at the port, enabling Mogadishu to serve as a redistribution point for goods destined for other markets in the region.
The establishment of the Colombo — Mogadishu corridor has significantly reduced lead times for importers and integrated Somalia more deeply into the primary trade routes of the Indian Ocean.
Data released by the MPA shows that January 2026 was the most productive month in the port’s history, processing a record 21,650 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) and servicing 16 container vessels in a single month. These figures represent a substantial increase in throughput capacity and reflect the growing confidence international shipping lines have in the port’s security and operational reliability.
Port officials attribute the surge in efficiency to the strategic direction of the new management team and the enhanced capability of the workforce.
By streamlining handling processes and reducing vessel turnaround times, the administration has demonstrated Mogadishu’s ability to compete with established regional ports.
The port’s infrastructure and management systems have matured to meet global standards, as indicated by its ability to handle complex transshipment operations while breaking volume records. For the Federal Government of Somalia, this success is a tangible economic victory.
The transformation of the port into a transshipment hub is attracting foreign direct investment and generating revenue streams beyond traditional import tariffs.
As global carriers like MSC deepen their engagement, the port is positioning itself as a critical engine for the country’s post-conflict economic revival and a key player in East African logistics. Further details are expected as the port continues to expand its capabilities and solidify its role as a regional logistics hub.
