KISORO, UGANDA — 26 MARCH 2026 – Kisoro Art Island, a novel cultural retreat on the shores of Lake Mutanda, Uganda, has officially opened its doors. This boutique retreat, co-founded by the celebrated Ugandan artist Ruganzu Bruno, is poised to stimulate sustainable economic growth for the local community through its unique blend of art and eco-tourism.
Nestled against the backdrop of the Virunga Mountains and adjacent to two UNESCO — protected forests, Kisoro Art Island offers a harmonious marriage of contemporary art and hospitality. The retreat’s architecture, designed by Ugandan architect Musabyi Alex, reflects indigenous Ugandan forms and Afrofuturist aesthetics, with guest villas inspired by traditional calabashes and incorporating the UNESCO-protected craft of Barkcloth.
The property’s design is a testament to its commitment to environmental harmony, utilizing local volcanic stone and reeds to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The island also features a ‘Zome’structure by Congolese refugee architect Patrick Muvunga, further enriching the regional narrative.
Kisoro Art Island boasts a permanent art collection curated by Ruganzu Bruno, showcasing works by renowned artists such as Sanaa Gateja and Samuel Kortey Baah. The collection includes a series of installations by Shrine, a U. S. Artist, and Kazindalo, a symbolic funnel by resident artist Sserunjogi Wilberforce, designed to promote rejuvenation.
Guests can also enjoy exclusive gorilla trekking expeditions, led by experienced guides from ranger families, and scenic boat trips on hand — painted vessels. The retreat’s dedication to sustainability and community empowerment makes it a beacon for the future of African art and culture.
