Djibouti — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has expressed grave concern over the intensifying political landscape in Somalia’s South West State. From its Djibouti headquarters, the regional body has been observing the escalating tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and the regional administration in Baidoa.
The focal point of the conflict lies in disagreements over the electoral roadmap and issues of regional autonomy. Local leaders have issued warnings of a “severe military response “to any interference by the federal government.
IGAD has underscored the necessity for resolving these differences through inclusive dialogue and adhering to national frameworks. The regional bloc has also reiterated its dedication to promoting Somalia’s peace, stability, and unity, and has offered its assistance in mediating and reconciling the warring parties.
The situation has drawn international concern, with Somalia’s partners expressing fears that the internal political strife could compromise the ongoing efforts to combat the Al-Shabaab extremist group.
