Gabon: Over a Dozen Localities Illegally Connected to Power Grid. LIBREVILLE, Gabon — 2026-03-05 Lead Paragraph The Gabonese government has revealed that over a dozen localities across the country are being supplied with electricity through illegal direct connections to the national grid.
The Minister of Universal Access to Water and Energy, Philippe Tonangoye, disclosed this on Gabon Télévision, according to the Gabonese Press Agency.
Among the affected areas are Ebel Abanga, Kango, Ntoum, Cocobeach, Iboundji, Bakoumba, and Pana, where connections are being made without official meters. Tonangoye emphasized that there are twelve such localities in the country.
The unauthorized connections are causing significant financial losses to the Société d’Énergie et d’Eau du Gabon (SEEG), with estimated losses ranging between 3 and 5 billion CFA francs over a period of five to six years.
The government has not yet announced any measures to address the issue. Further details are expected as the situation unfolds.
The government is likely to face challenges in ensuring that all illegal connections are dismantled and that the national grid is secured against such practices in the future.
