[Libreville, Gabon] In Libreville, the Gabonese province of Ngounié has unveiled the Louétsi-PPC project, a new initiative to tackle malaria. The province is situated in central Gabon and is known for its lush forests and diverse wildlife.
The Louétsi-PPC project is a collaborative effort between the Gabonese government and Expertise France, a French public agency. It specifically targets children under five years of age and pregnant women, aiming to decrease the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with malaria in these vulnerable groups.
The project is expected to implement a range of measures, such as strengthening disease surveillance, improving diagnostic techniques, and distributing antimalarial medications. Additionally, community education and engagement programs will be introduced to foster behavioral changes that can lower the risk of malaria infection.
Representatives from the Gabonese government emphasize the importance of this project, noting that reducing malaria in Ngounié province is a critical component of the nation’s broader health and development objectives.
Malaria continues to be a significant public health concern in Gabon, with high transmission rates throughout the country. The Louétsi-PPC project is part of a wider strategy to combat the disease and supports Gabon’s commitment to meeting health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
