Morocco Welcomes AFCON Title Award Amidst Senegal’s Appeal. Rabat, Morocco — The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has welcomed the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to award Morocco the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, which was stripped from Senegal.
The FRMF issued a statement on Thursday, expressing its approval of the decision, which it said “upholds the rights and integrity of the competition.
Officials commented on the matter. “
The CAF had announced on January 18 that its Appeal Board had awarded the tournament to Morocco, the defeated finalists, following the controversial events during the final match between the two countries.
The final match, which Senegal won 1-0 in extra time, was delayed for 14 minutes when the Senegalese players and staff returned to the dressing room in protest against the awarding of an injury-time penalty to Morocco.
Despite the delay, Moroccan striker Brahim Diaz missed the kick, allowing Senegal to secure the victory with Pape Gueye’s goal. “
The FRMF maintained a clear and consistent position: the strict application of the governing regulations, “the federation’s statement read. “Following its appeal, CAF has now confirmed that the applicable regulations were not properly enforced.”.
Morocco’s appeal to CAF to overturn the result was initially rejected, and the Appeal Board decision came two months after the final was completed.
The FRMF emphasized that it acted in full compliance with all relevant legal and procedural frameworks throughout the process.
In response to the CAF’s ruling, the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) announced that it would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
This process could take as long as a year to reach a final decision. Senegal’s government also alleged corruption following the decision and called for an independent international investigation into the matter.
Further details are expected as the situation develops.
