Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – A severe flooding and landslides crisis in the Mbeya Region of Tanzania, triggered by heavy rains during the March–May rainy season, has prompted a €100,000 humanitarian donation from the European Union (EU) to assist the affected communities.
The disaster, which began on March 25, 2026, has led to multiple landslides and flash floods, causing extensive damage to homes and critical infrastructure. At least 20 lives have been lost, and several others injured, with around 600 displaced individuals seeking shelter in schools and temporary facilities, where conditions remain overcrowded and health risks are heightened.
The EU’s emergency funding will be channeled through the Tanzania Red Cross Society to provide essential assistance, including shelter, clean water, health services, and hygiene and sanitation support.
The operation aims to reach over 2,600 people affected across Rungwe and Kyela Districts, with relief efforts expected to last until the end of July 2026. This support is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) managed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The EU, along with its Member States, is the world’s leading donor of humanitarian aid, emphasizing the Union’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations during crises.
The donation reflects the EU’s role in global disaster response and its dedication to safeguarding human dignity and integrity. It also highlights the importance of international cooperation in mitigating the impacts of natural disasters and promoting resilience in the face of climate change challenges.
