LIBREVILLE, Gabon — President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema of Gabon has prioritized digital youth training as a cornerstone of his administration’s digital transformation strategy.
The nation’s efforts to reduce the digital skills gap and nurture a qualified workforce have led to several significant initiatives and strategic partnerships.
The Agence nationale des infrastructures numériques et des fréquences (ANINF) has implemented immersive programs for secondary and university students in digital fields, aiming to bridge the gap between academic learning and the realities of the digital job market.
In parallel, a partnership with the American company Cybastion has provided free digital training to 1,000 young Gabonese, focusing on cybersecurity and IT. President Oligui Nguema’s “Un étudiant, un ordinateur “project has distributed over 7,000 computers to students and young entrepreneurs, enhancing access to tools for work and learning and narrowing the digital divide.
The Africa DigiEmpower initiative, launched by Cybastion, is a continent — wide digital workforce initiative that includes free, accredited training courses through the Cisco Networking Academy. This program is instrumental in preparing Gabon’s youth for the 21st-century digital economy. Antonia Oliveira, Managing Director of Cybastion’s Gabon office, emphasized the importance of human capital in Africa’s digital development.
Cybastion’s Digital Fast Track program is aimed at strengthening Gabon’s digital infrastructure and enhancing national cybersecurity.
The Centre de Compétences Zita Oligui Nguema (CCPE’ZON), a partnership between the Foundation of the First Lady and the University Omar Bongo, has been instrumental in training young Gabonese for professional insertion and economic sovereignty. Since 2023, President Oligui Nguema has been focusing vocational training at the heart of the national economic reconstruction strategy, addressing the dual challenge of youth unemployment and the mismatch between education and economic needs. Gabon’s strategic pivot towards digital youth training reflects the nation’s commitment to transitioning from an oil-dependent economy to a more diversified and technology-driven one.
As the country invests in education and infrastructure, it positions itself as a key player in the global digital economy. KICKER: Gabon’s commitment to digital youth empowerment is a critical step in ensuring the country’s young generation is equipped to thrive in the digital age.
