Marrakech, Morocco — The GITEX Africa 2026 conference officially commenced in Marrakech, drawing over 50,000 participants for a comprehensive three-day event focused on networking, pitches, and opportunities. The event, a cornerstone initiative under the Ministry of Digital Transition, saw Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni deliver an opening speech emphasizing Morocco’s commitment to becoming a key player in global digital transformation.
In her address, El Fallah Seghrouchni highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it serves as a pivotal hub for shaping Africa’s digital future and influencing global technology trends. Morocco, she stated, is actively transitioning from visionary planning to concrete action in establishing a new model of digital sovereignty, one that adapts to the rapid technological and geopolitical changes occurring worldwide. “We are making a technological bet to serve a new model of sovereignty, “El Fallah Seghrouchni declared. She further explained that Morocco does not intend to directly compete with global powers but instead aims to forge its unique “third way “in the realm of digital technology and artificial intelligence.
This new model is built upon four fundamental pillars. Firstly, it emphasizes practical technological sovereignty aimed at serving the public interest. Secondly, it advocates for an authentic modernity that respects national specificities.
Thirdly, it seeks to achieve a balanced technological strength that connects Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic. Lastly, it plays a crucial role in fostering international dialogue on digitalization and artificial intelligence issues.
The minister elaborated on Morocco’s strategic location, diverse partnerships, and active participation in multilateral dialogues as key factors positioning the nation to become an international hub for discussions on ethical artificial intelligence. She emphasized the need for a balance between innovation, sovereignty, and responsibility in the field of digital technology.
