Rabat, Morocco — April 20, 2026 — In a strategic move to streamline the journey of Moroccan expatriates returning home, the Port of Almeria is investing heavily in infrastructure upgrades.
The port has allocated €141,830 to fortify its facilities in preparation for the 2026 Marhaba Operation, a pivotal initiative that supports the transit of the Moroccan diaspora during the summer season.
The centerpiece of these enhancements is the deployment of a vast 7,525-square-meter shade system, designed to alleviate waiting times and improve passenger comfort for those traveling with vehicles.
The project also encompasses two expansive vehicle areas and a dedicated checkpoint structure, totaling 6,800 square meters in the pre-boarding zone.
In addition to these developments, the port will be supported by auxiliary services including the Red Cross and Guardia Civil, as well as the Maritime Station, all contributing to the comprehensive mobilization for the Marhaba Operation.
The Mohamed V Foundation for Solidarity has been instrumental in ensuring the success of the Marhaba Operation, providing necessary support to facilitate the influx of Moroccan expatriates returning to their homeland. Since its inception in 2001, the operation has been a cornerstone of Moroccan diaspora engagement, with the foundation deploying social workers and medical staff to assist travelers. Last year, the foundation reported over 4 million Moroccans returning home between June 10 and September 15, with peak periods witnessing more than 86,000 crossings daily.
This year’s operation is expected to see a continuation of this scale, with the Port Authority of Almería (APA) emphasizing the importance of a safe and efficient transit for millions of individuals.
As the summer approaches, the focus remains on ensuring that the Marhaba Operation not only facilitates the return of the Moroccan diaspora but also showcases the port’s commitment to service excellence and the well-being of its travelers.
