Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The African Union has awarded a substantial $10 million grant to the Nkafu Policy Institute, a leading independent think tank based in Cameroon.
The funding is part of the Africa Think Tank Platform (ATTP), a landmark initiative aimed at bolstering evidence-based policy-making and socioeconomic transformation across Africa.
The Nkafu Policy Institute, a member of the Building Resilience and Impact through Dialogue and Galvanising Action for Evidence — Informed Policymaking (BRIDGE-Africa) Consortium, will utilize the grant to lead health policy research in Central Africa. This research will focus on health systems financing, a critical area where capacity constraints have historically limited in-country research to inform government decision-making.
The ATTP, a five — year, $50 million initiative, is a collaborative effort between the African Union and the World Bank Group. It is designed to enhance the capacity of 13 leading African think tanks to conduct research and foster collaborative projects that address Africa’s most pressing challenges. Dr.
Denis A. Foretia, Executive Chairman of the Nkafu Policy Institute and Co-Principal Investigator of BRIDGE-Africa, expressed the significance of the grant, emphasizing the potential of African think tanks when collaborating effectively. “Central Africa has one of the highest burdens of preventable disease in the world, with significantly constrained health financing systems, “Dr.
Foretia stated. “This grant provides the platform and the resources to begin to change that.”.
The ATTP represents the largest dedicated investment in African think tank capacity in the history of the African Union, signaling a shift towards home — grown, continent-driven solutions to Africa’s challenges. For the Nkafu Policy Institute, the grant marks a significant milestone in its mission to produce independent, evidence-informed policy research that addresses governance, health, economic, and development challenges in Cameroon and the broader Central African region.
