Zimbabwean Conservationist Dr. Moreangels Mbizah Wins 2026 Whitley Award for Lion Protection and Community Coexistence. Accra, Ghana – Dr.
Moreangels Mbizah, a conservationist from Zimbabwe, has been awarded the 2026 Whitley Award for her innovative approach to protecting lions and reducing human-wildlife conflict. Mbizah’s NGO, Wildlife Conservation Action (WCA), has successfully decreased human-lion conflict incidents by up to 98% in rural wards, utilizing a data-driven, coexistence model.
The “Batabilili “model, which involves community guardians monitoring lion movements and deploying solar-powered deterrents, has proven effective in safeguarding livestock and preserving lions’natural habitat. This expansion is vital for the conservation of lions, which have seen a significant decline across Africa, with fewer than 19,000 remaining in the wild. Mbizah’s work exemplifies the importance of fostering coexistence between lions and local communities.
The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) recognizes the value of Mbizah’s contributions, emphasizing the balance between wildlife protection and human livelihoods. Conservation experts commend Mbizah’s approach, considering it a potential model for successful community-led conservation efforts. By integrating scientific research with community solutions, WCA has protected wildlife while enhancing the lives of local residents.
Challenges remain, including the sustainability of alternative livelihoods such as chilli farming and the technical aspects of managing expanded lion populations.
However, the success of Mbizah’s project offers hope for lion conservation in Zimbabwe and beyond, as the global community addresses biodiversity loss and seeks innovative conservation solutions.
