Marrakech, Morocco — The Royal Moroccan Navy is on the cusp of acquiring a new patrol vessel, the RMNS Moulay Hassan, constructed by Spain’s Navantia.
The vessel, named in honor of Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, has concluded its sea trials in the Bay of Cadiz, a pivotal step before its formal handover.
The patrol vessel, which is based on Navantia’s Avante 1800 design, is set to bolster Morocco’s maritime capabilities and represents a significant milestone in bilateral defense ties.
The Moulay Hassan’s sea trials, conducted off the coast of San Fernando, were designed to ensure the vessel’s performance and operational readiness. With dimensions of 87 meters in length, 13 meters in beam, and a draft of 4 meters, the patrol vessel displaces 2,020 tons at full load and can achieve a top speed of 24 knots. Equipped with a helicopter flight deck and the capacity to carry two rigid-hull inflatable boats, the vessel is a versatile addition to Morocco’s naval fleet.
The Avante 1800 class vessel is armed with an Oto Melara 76 mm main gun and is designed to carry a range of secondary cannons and missile launchers for point-defense and surface-to-air/surface-to-surface engagements. Its stealth features, advanced sensors, and a range of 4,000 nautical miles make it a formidable asset for Morocco’s naval deterrence.
The project, valued at approximately €130 to €150 million, includes a comprehensive technical-logistical support package and training for Moroccan naval personnel. This investment is a testament to Morocco’s commitment to modernizing its navy and enhancing its maritime security.
The RMNS Moulay Hassan is expected to fill a critical gap in Morocco’s naval fleet, complementing its existing coastal patrol boats and larger warships like the FREMM-class flagship frigate, Mohammed VI.
The vessel’s delivery is anticipated to take place later this summer, marking the first time a Spanish shipyard has built a warship for Morocco in over four decades.
The acquisition of the RMNS Moulay Hassan underscores the strategic importance of maritime security in the region and the growing defense cooperation between Morocco and Spain.
