Gabon Postpones Press Freedom Day Celebration Amid National Commemorations. LIBREVILLE, Gabon – The Gabonese Ministry of Communication and Media announced on Saturday the postponement of the celebration of World Press Freedom Day, originally set for May 3, to May 8, 2026.
The decision, according to the Gabonese Press Agency, was motivated by the “high density of the national agenda dedicated to commemorations and other general interest events.”.
The Gabonese government explained that the delay aims to ensure that the World Press Freedom Day receives the full attention, solemnity, and mobilization it deserves, in line with the importance attached to press freedom, the diversity of information, and the essential role of media professionals in the country’s democratic life.
The Minister of Communication and Media, Germain Biahodjow, expressed the government’s gratitude to the media actors for their understanding and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a responsible, pluralistic, and fully oriented media environment towards the public interest.
The postponement has sparked discussions about the state of press freedom in Gabon, which has seen a decline in its ranking in the World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), now placing 43rd out of 180 countries.
The country is also facing internal challenges with new digital regulations that could impact media independence.
The ordinance, No. 0011/PR/2026, regulates digital platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) and introduces joint liability for publishers, raising concerns about potential restrictions on media freedom.
The High Authority for Communication (HAC) has also been criticized for its lack of independence and its ability to sanction media outlets without a collective vote.
As Gabon prepares for the rescheduled World Press Freedom Day celebration, the international community and local activists will be watching closely to see how the event unfolds and whether the country’s commitment to press freedom is reflected in its policies and actions.
