PRETORIA — A South African police captain, Johannes van Rensburg, has been granted bail of R50,000 following his arrest on fraud charges. The 53-year-old appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with fraud and theft. Van Rensburg was detained by the SAPS anti-corruption unit after an internal probe into irregular financial transactions.
He is alleged to have exploited the SAPS’Protection Security Services’financial system to withdraw cash fraudulently, purporting it to be for travel expenses of presidential protection officers. These officers did not receive the funds, and it is claimed that van Rensburg took the money in several large sums.
The captain’s arrest stemmed from an internal investigation by the SAPS, which uncovered the suspicious activities. The police statement highlighted the severity of the allegations, emphasizing that no one within the force is above the law.
The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court will handle the case further, and bail conditions will be scrutinized to ensure that van Rensburg remains under supervision during the legal process.
