South Africa’s First Integrated Liver Centre Debuts in Cape Town and Gqeberha. Cape Town, South Africa — The first integrated Liver Centre in South Africa has officially launched in both Cape Town and Gqeberha, marking a significant advancement in liver care across the country.
According to local reports, the new Liver Centres are designed to provide comprehensive and advanced treatments for liver diseases, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
The integrated approach aims to streamline patient care, improve outcomes, and reduce the burden on healthcare systems.
The lead physician at the new Liver Centre in Cape Town, Dr. Thandeka Nxumalo, said “This is a groundbreaking development for our country.
We are now able to offer a one — stop solution for liver care, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care.”
The centres are equipped with state — of-the-art technology and staffed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including hepatologists, surgeons, radiologists, and nurses. They offer a range of services, including liver biopsies, imaging, liver transplantation, and treatment for liver diseases.
The launch of the Liver Centres is expected to significantly reduce waiting times for liver transplants, which have been a critical issue in South Africa.
The government has been working on improving access to transplant services, and these new centres are a part of that initiative. Officials commented on the matter.

The Liver Centres are also expected to have a positive economic impact, as they will create jobs and attract medical tourism. While the launch of the Liver Centres is a significant step forward, challenges remain, including the need for increased awareness about liver health and the availability of resources to support the new facilities.
Further details about the Liver Centres’operational status and patient intake are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
