Sudan RSF Drone Strike on School Leaves Two Children Dead in El — Rahad. El-Rahad, Sudan — A drone strike attributed to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 12 others in the southern Kordofan city of El-Rahad on Wednesday, a medical source told AFP.
The incident occurred at a traditional Koranic school, which has become a focal point in the ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army since April 2023.
According to Ahmed Moussa, an eyewitness to the attack, “I saw a dozen students injured “as the drone struck the school.
The Kordofan region, where the attack took place, is described as the fiercest battlefield in the war between the RSF and the Sudanese army. El-Rahad lies on a critical axis connecting the North Kordofan state capital, El-Obeid, to the White Nile river, which is the army’s main line to the capital Khartoum.
The city was retaken by the army in February 2023 as part of a rapid offensive that aimed to break a long-running siege on El-Obeid. Since then, the RSF has been attempting to re-encircle El-Obeid, including through successive drone strikes on the eastern highway, which connects the western region of Darfur with the rest of the country.
The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and left around 11 million people displaced, creating the world’s largest hunger and displacement crises.
The situation has also effectively split the country in two, with the army controlling the north, center, and east, while the RSF and its allies hold the west and parts of the south. Since the conflict began, over 115,000 people have been forced from their homes, according to data released by the UN’s International Organization for Migration.
The RSF and the army have exchanged drone strikes across vast areas, killing dozens at a time.
In just over two weeks, some 90 civilians were killed and 142 injured in drone strikes, according to UN rights chief Volker Turk.
The situation in Kordofan remains volatile, with hundreds of thousands facing starvation under daily drone strikes. Further details are expected as the situation develops.
