Ethiopian Police Seize Over 50,000 Rounds of Ammunition Sent by Eritrea. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Ethiopian police have uncovered a significant cache of ammunition, totaling more than 50,000 rounds, which they claim was sent by Eritrea to arm rebels within the country.
In a Facebook statement, Ethiopian police revealed the seizure of the ammunition in the Amhara region, intended for the Fano, a militant group that has been fighting against the federal government since 2023.
The police also mentioned that the ammunition was transported in a lorry and transited through the northern region of Tigray with the assistance of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Ethiopia had previously accused its neighbor, Eritrea, of attempting to destabilize the country by financing armed groups, particularly in the Amhara region, a claim Eritrea dismissed as a “sham.”
The TPLF, which once ruled Ethiopia until it was displaced by the current administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has been a focal point of the conflict.
TPLF Vice President Amanuel Assefa accused the federal authorities of seeking a pretext to undermine the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea in 2022. Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Ghebremeskel told AFP that Ethiopia was fabricating claims to justify a war it had been eager to wage for two years.
Eritrea, which gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, fought a border war with Ethiopia from 1998 to 2000.
Despite initially seeking rapprochement with Eritrea upon his rise to power in 2018, Abiy’s relationship with Eritrea has soured in recent months, particularly after the two governments fell out over the peace accord involving the TPLF.
The situation remains tense, with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki declaring that Ethiopia’s ruling party had “declared war.”Further details are expected as the situation unfolds.
