Khartoum, Sudan — January 16, 2026 Sudan’s Food Aid at Risk of Running Dry, UN Warns.
The United Nations has issued an urgent appeal for $700 million in funding to prevent food aid in Sudan from running out by the end of March.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that without immediate additional funding, millions of people in Sudan, already suffering from the country’s ongoing civil war, will be left without vital food assistance within weeks.
According to the WFP, over 21 million people in Sudan, nearly half of the population, face acute hunger.
The crisis has been exacerbated by the brutal war between Sudan’s military government and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has led to the displacement of around 11 million people and the killing of tens of thousands. Ross Smith, director of emergency preparedness and response at the WFP, stated in a press release, “WFP has been forced to reduce rations to the absolute minimum for survival.
By the end of March, we will have depleted our food stocks in Sudan.”
The requested funding would allow the WFP to continue operations in Sudan through June.
The situation is dire, with famine confirmed in areas where months of fighting have made access for aid workers largely impossible.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, called for an “all-out effort “by the international community to provide humanitarian assistance under the current circumstances. Efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far failed, with both the government and RSF accused of war crimes.
The Rapid Support Forces are suspected of atrocities, including indiscriminate killing and mass rape, over recent months, as they retreated from the capital, Khartoum, to the western state of Darfur and central Kordofan region.
Efforts led by the US and regional mediators, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, known as the Quad, to secure a ceasefire have been met with resistance from the government, which accuses the UAE of supporting its enemy.
The UAE denies these allegations.
The situation in Sudan remains critical, with the UN warning that the food aid crisis could worsen unless urgent funding is secured.
Further details are expected as the situation develops.
