The event marked the end of a diplomatic term characterized by enhanced cooperation between the two nations. Dr. Ansah expressed Malawi’s deep gratitude for Ambassador Oya’s dedicated service, emphasizing how the diplomat’s tenure has deepened the partnership between the countries.
She highlighted the shared values and mutual respect that have underpinned the relationship, which was established over six decades ago.
According to the Vice President, Japan has been a steadfast development ally for Malawi, significantly contributing across various sectors such as healthcare, energy reform, agriculture, education, infrastructure, and capacity building. Notable projects supported by Japan include the construction of the new Lilongwe River Bridge, upgrades to electricity substations in Kanengo and Old Town, and improvements at the Domasi Technical College of Education.
Dr.
Ansah also commended the role of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in Malawi, noting the country’s distinction as the world’s largest host of such volunteers. This, she said reflects Malawi’s stability, hospitality, and cultural compatibility with Japan.
The Vice President also recognized Japan’s commitment to the modernization of the Nacala Corridor, a vital trade route benefiting Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. Ambassador Oya, in his farewell address, praised Dr. Ansah for her recent electoral victory and reflected on his six-year tenure in Malawi.
He described the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy as one of the most challenging periods of his mission, witnessing extensive destruction and human suffering in affected areas.
In his final remarks, Ambassador Oya expressed admiration for Lake Malawi, the Japan Day festivities, and his hope for the continued flourishing of Japanese culture in Malawi.
The farewell engagement signifies the conclusion of a productive diplomatic chapter and the anticipation of a new era of Malawi — Japan cooperation.
