LIBREVILLE, 7 avril 2026 (AGP) – Zeine Ould Zeidane, a Mauritanian national, has been appointed as the new director of the Africa Department at the International Monetary Fund (FMI), assuming his role on May 1, 2026. He succeeds Abebe Aemro Selassie, who has held the position since 2016, according to Radio France Internationale.
Zeidane joined the FMI in 2012, where he served as the Deputy Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department, overseeing relations with Gulf countries. His strategic contributions included establishing the regional office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a pivotal development for the FMI in the region.
Recognized for his strong interpersonal skills and extensive network across Africa, Zeidane is known for his calm and balanced approach, which has been effective in resolving complex and delicate issues. FMI Director-General Kristalina Georgieva expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Africa Department, noting his success and conviction in the role.
Before joining the FMI, Zeidane held significant positions in Mauritanian finance, including Economic Advisor to President Maaouiya Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya, Governor of the Central Bank of Mauritania, and as Prime Minister under Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, President of Mauritania from 2007 to 2008. He is also academically accomplished, holding a Doctorate in Applied Mathematics and a DEA in Macroeconomics from the University of Nice.
