Lagos, Nigeria — Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar has confirmed his resignation, a move that was publicly announced via a statement on Facebook by his spokesperson on Monday. The resignation follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive, which compelled ministers and other political appointees contemplating a run for the 2027 elections to resign by March 31. Tuggar, a British-educated diplomat who took office in 2023, had previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany.
Tuggar’s resignation coincides with his reported intention to contest for the governorship of Bauci state in 2027. The decision aligns with President Tinubu’s directive to all political appointees planning to vie for elective office, encompassing a wide array of roles such as ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior assistants, and chief executives of various federal government entities. This directive aims to clear the way for fresh faces in the upcoming elections.
