Nigeria’s Wasteful Performance Secures Win Over Tanzania in AFCON 2025 Opener. Fez, Morocco — In a match that showcased a mix of wastefulness and determination, Nigeria secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their opening Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 match in Fez, Morocco. Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities, the Super Eagles struggled to convert their efforts into goals, with star striker Victor Osimhen particularly unlucky in his quest for a hat-trick.
The first half saw Nigeria dominating possession but failing to capitalise on their superiority. Nigerian centre half Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the first half, but Tanzania’s Charles M’Mombwa quickly equalised.
The turning point came after the equaliser, as Atalanta attacker Ademola Lookman struck the winning goal for Nigeria.
Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Masudi suffered a facial injury after advancing off his line to block a shot by Akor Adams, which led to a dangerous set piece. Sevilla striker Adams came close as his near-post header hit the top of the crossbar.
Nigeria’s frustrations were evident in the second half, especially after 2023 African player of the year Osimhen was fouled by Ibrahim Hamad.
Despite several close attempts, Nigeria’s lead remained at one goal until Lookman’s decisive strike. Coach Eric Chelle, who had expressed his desire for more goals after Nigeria’s disappointment in failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, will hope for an improvement in his team’s finishing as they prepare for their next challenge against Tunisia in Fez on Saturday.
Tanzania’s AFCON debut ended in defeat, with the East Africans hoping to build on their performances in their upcoming matches against Uganda and Tunisia.
Nigeria will look to maintain their winning start in Group C when they face Uganda on December 30.
The match highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, with Nigeria’s attacking prowess and Tanzania’s resilience on display. While the Super Eagles secured a much-needed victory, they will need to address their finishing issues if they are to progress in the tournament.
