US Deploys 100 Soldiers to Nigeria as Attacks by Armed Groups Surge. City, Country — The United States has deployed 100 military personnel to northern Nigeria, as the threat from armed groups such as Boko Haram and ISIL (ISIS)-linked factions intensifies. Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters spokesman, Samaila Uba, confirmed the arrival of the US troops in the northeastern area of Bauchi on Monday.
According to Uba, the US military personnel will provide “technical support “and “intelligence sharing “to assist Nigerian forces in targeting and defeating “terrorist organisations.”
The deployment includes associated equipment to support the mission, although the US soldiers are not expected to play a direct combat role.
The Nigerian military is facing a protracted fight with numerous armed groups, including Boko Haram and its breakaway faction, the ISIL affiliate in West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Other groups such as the ISIL — linked Lakurawa and “bandit “groups specializing in kidnapping for ransom and illegal mining also pose significant threats.
The crisis has recently worsened to include fighters from the neighboring Sahel region, including the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, which claimed its first attack on Nigerian soil last year.
The US deployment follows an easing of tensions between Washington and Nigeria, which flared late last year when US President Donald Trump accused the country of failing to stop killings against Christians and threatened to intervene militarily.
The Nigerian government has rejected Trump’s accusation, and analysts say people across all faiths, not just Christians, are victims of armed groups’violence. Last weekend, gunmen on motorcycles rampaged through three villages in northern Nigeria, killing at least 46 people and abducting many others.
The bloodiest attack occurred in the village of Konkoso, in Niger State, where at least 38 people were shot dead or had their throats slit.
The deployment of US troops is seen as a supportive measure by the Nigerian military to help combat the armed groups.
However, some may view the US presence as an intervention that could exacerbate tensions in the region. Further details about the specific training and support the US troops will provide to the Nigerian military, as well as the expected duration of the deployment, remain unclear.
The situation remains developing, with further details expected in the coming days.
