KAMPALA, UGANDA — A tragic incident on the Nguse River has left at least 20 people feared dead and eight survivors struggling to recover from the harrowing experience.
The overloaded vessel, which was carrying bags of charcoal, capsized in the dark, with authorities suspecting overloading and poor maintenance as contributing factors to the disaster.
The survivors, including charcoal burners and farmers returning from Kikuube District to Kagadi, were quickly taken to local health facilities for medical attention.
The boat’s collapse, which has once again highlighted the dangers of unsafe transport in rural areas, underscores the critical need for improved safety measures on Uganda’s waterways.
