LIBREVILLE, Gabon — The Gabonese Central Buying Hub (CEAG) is set to unveil a “mega market “in Akanda on April 25, 2026, as part of a strategic initiative to combat soaring living costs.
The event, scheduled to begin at 8 AM, will be held at the esplanade of the Angondjé Stadium, marking the official launch of the CEAG’s commercialization efforts. CEAG’s Director General, Théophile Boutamba, revealed in a statement that the temporary market will offer three main categories of products: dried goods (rice, tomato paste, oil), fresh produce (chickens, onions), and domestic care items (laundry detergent, dishwashing products). Post-event, a designated partner will distribute these products to 47 sales points across Grand Libreville, with plans to expand to other areas including Owendo, Bikélé, and into the interior of the country.
This launch follows the inauguration of the CEAG’s headquarters on April 11, 2026, and is aligned with the government’s anti-inflation strategy.
The CEAG, a public — private partnership, aims to stabilize prices by centralizing imports and circumventing intermediaries, thereby reducing the cost of the household basket. While the initiative is hailed as a crucial tool for improving living conditions, some critics caution that it could lead to monopolies or limit market competition. Economic experts’perspectives on the CEAG’s long-term impact on Gabon’s economy and inflation rates are eagerly awaited.
The “mega market “in Akanda is anticipated to draw a large crowd in search of affordable goods, providing a platform for the CEAG to demonstrate its commitment to providing essential items at reduced prices.
The success of this event is seen as a stepping stone towards broader economic stability and improved living conditions for Gabon’s citizens.
