Tanzania: New MP-Funded Boat Ends Years of Dangerous River Crossings for Schoolchildren in Missenyi. Missenyi, Tanzania — December 11, 2025 — For over two decades, schoolchildren in Missenyi District, northwest Tanzania, have faced perilous daily crossings of the Kagera River to attend school. This hazardous journey has now come to an end with the donation of a modern motorized boat by Missenyi Member of Parliament Florent Kyombo.
The river crossing, which was a treacherous and life — threatening endeavor for students attending Bugorora Primary School and Nkenge Secondary School, has been a persistent challenge. Even the youngest children were forced to navigate turbulent currents, unpredictable weather, and the constant threat of wildlife. With frequent absences of canoe operators, many students resorted to ferrying themselves, leading to late arrivals, absenteeism, and constant fear.
During a 2024 field visit, this reporter witnessed the severity of the situation firsthand. Three primary school pupils shared their experiences: “We’re always late for school because of the river, “one girl whispered. “Sometimes we miss lessons because we’re too scared to cross.”.
The turning point came in 2023 when Hon. Florent Laurent Kyombo visited Lushenye hamlet and heard directly from residents about the hardships they faced.
In response, the MP has provided a reliable, engine — powered canoe to ease transportation between Lushenye and Bugorora village, dramatically improving access to schools and other vital services.
At the official handover ceremony, residents celebrated with dancing and cheers, expressing overwhelming gratitude.
The community now feels seen and supported, with no longer the risk of drowning or encountering hippos and crocodiles for their children’s education. Hon.
Kyombo assured the community that he will cover fuel and maintenance costs until 2030, after which the community will take ownership.
Residents hailed his integrity, commitment, and leadership, expressing renewed hope for promised developments such as rural electrification, a satellite school, and improved local infrastructure. With this new boat, the community, long defined by risk and isolation, now sees a safer, brighter future where education is no longer a life-threatening journey.
Further details are expected as the community adapts to this significant change.
According to local reports, the donation has been a transformative step towards ensuring that education is accessible to all children in Missenyi District.
