Stockholm, Sweden — Sweden will keep state-building, climate adaptation and economic growth at the center of its aid to Somalia, according to the Swedish ambassador in Mogadishu. Hans Henric Lundquist told UNDP this week that Stockholm’s programs will continue to weave human-rights and conflict-sensitive standards into projects that strengthen governance and help communities absorb climate shocks. “A safe and secure Somalia where the population has economic opportunities” remains the long-term objective, the ambassador.
Official statements indicate that Sweden chairs the steering committee of the Somalia Joint Fund and co — finances the National Transformation Plan. Recent cooperation has focused on transformational governance, climate-security mechanisms and drought-response systems built with UNDP.
The envoy noted that earlier Swedish — backed schemes—covering integrated water management, charcoal-use reduction and early-warning networks—delivered visible results on the ground.
Stockholm now ranks among the ten largest non — core donors to UNDP globally. Looking ahead, Lundquist underlined the importance of a robust United Nations presence as the UNTMIS mandate ends in October 2026.
He said UNDP’s governance and poverty-reduction tasks will stay central during the planned shift to a strengthened UN country team framework, and pledged that Swedish support will follow suit.
“Sweden will continue its support to Somalia and its people. We look forward to building new ties as opportunities expand,” the ambassador added, pointing to prospects for deeper business and trade links.
