Amidst widespread panic, social media is abuzz with reports of dry pumps and long queues across Durban and the Cape Flats. Siganeko Magafela, the association’s head of supply, stated that the demand has surged threefold, overwhelming the transportation system. Avhapfani Tshifularo, the association’s executive director, warned that the situation could worsen before prices rise, with petrol expected to jump by about R6 per litre and diesel by over R10 per litre.
The agricultural sector is particularly concerned, as diesel is vital for farming operations.
The soaring international oil prices, now over US$115 per barrel, have further exacerbated the situation, with South Africa heavily reliant on imports for its fuel supply.
