Johannesburg, South Africa — 2026-03-25 South Africa arrests 12 senior police officers on suspicion of corruption. South African anti-graft investigators have apprehended 12 senior police officers on allegations of corruption and fraud, according to prosecutors.
The arrests were made on Wednesday, with the officers appearing in court in Pretoria.
These developments follow an ongoing inquiry into high — ranking corruption within the South African police force, which was ordered by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Last year, Ramaphosa suspended the police minister amidst these allegations.
A second inquiry by Parliament is examining claims that senior police officers had corrupt associations with alleged crime bosses, receiving money for favors in some instances.
The current arrests are linked to a controversial contract for health and well — being services to police officers, which was awarded to Medicare24, a company owned by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Matlala, who is also suspected of links to organized crime, is currently detained in a maximum-security prison on unrelated charges of attempted murder.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s anti-corruption investigative unit stated that the 12 officers, some of whom were part of the bid committee that awarded the contract, should have disqualified Medicare24’s application.
All the officers submitted affidavits in support of their bail applications, with prosecutors indicating they would not oppose bail. Further details are expected as the situation unfolds.
The government has not yet commented on the arrests.
