Senegal’s New Leadership: What to Expect on African & Global Stage

On Wednesday, the newly elected Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed former jailed opposition leader Ousmane Sonko as the country’s prime minister.

The election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the head of Senegal and the appointment of Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister “will stimulate the approach of many Sahel countries, notably Mali, to finally break free from colonial yoke,” President of the Political Party Bloc for Recovery and Development of Mali, Oumar MC Kone, told Sputnik Africa.

The politician praised the directions outlined in the inaugural speech of the new head of state, highlighting that he “goes in the right direction towards seeking sovereignty and also getting rid of bad practices that hinder development.”

A possible rapprochement between Dakar and the countries of the AES (Alliance of Sahel States) is “plausible,” according to the politician who sees a “bright” future in it, adding that Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko “follow their vision of being sovereign for the Senegalese people.”
