Senegalese Football Federation Condemns Harsh Sentencing of Fans in Morocco. Dakar, Senegal — February 20, 2026 The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has strongly condemned the sentencing of 18 Senegalese football fans in Morocco, describing the verdict as “incomprehensibly harsh. ” The group, found guilty of hooliganism following the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco, was handed prison terms ranging from three to 12 months.
The incident occurred during the AFCON final on January 18, where Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 on home soil. Following the match, some Senegalese fans attempted a pitch invasion, prompting Senegal’s players to halt the game for nearly 20 minutes. Objects, including a chair, were also thrown onto the field.
Nine supporters were sentenced to one year in prison and fined 5,000 dirhams ($545), six others received six months and a fine of 2,000 dirhams ($218), and three were sentenced to three months with a fine of 1,000 dirhams ($109). “We express our profound dismay and distress following the verdict,” said Bacary Cisse, president of the FSF’s communications committee, According to reports. “This incomprehensibly harsh decision has provoked widespread outrage,” he added.
Cisse further stated that clashes occur in numerous stadiums worldwide, including in Morocco, without resulting in such sanctions. “The treatment of these supporters therefore appears disproportionate,” he. Defence lawyer Patrick Kabou described the verdict as “incomprehensible,” calling his clients “victims.
” The FSF’s reaction underscores the international community’s concern over the severity of the sentences, particularly given the context of football-related incidents worldwide.
The situation remains a point of contention between Senegal and Morocco, with both nations’ football federations having a stake in ensuring fair treatment for their fans. Further details are expected as the situation develops.
