Khartoum, Sudan — South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has convened a high-level meeting in Khartoum, bringing together regional leaders including Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania.
The purpose of the meeting is to address the ongoing instability and conflict in South Sudan. Ramaphosa and Kikwete, both prominent public figures, have been actively engaged in mediation efforts in the region. Accompanying them is Yoweri Museveni, the President of Uganda, a key figure in the African Union’s peace initiatives.
The delegation is expected to engage with South Sudanese leadership, including opposition leader Riek Machar. This gathering is part of the African Union’s and the Intergovernmental Authority for Development’s efforts to broker peace talks among the warring factions.
The complexity of the situation is highlighted by the involvement of the African Court on Human and Peoples’Rights and the National Salvation Front, as well as the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Government and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition.
