LIBREVILLE, Gabon — On Monday, March 30, 2026, Gabon marked a significant milestone in its environmental efforts with the launch of the second phase of the national workshop on Sectoral Public Policies (IPPS) that promote biodiversity in the mining and agricultural sectors. The Gabonese Press Agency reported that the event was opened by Roger François Azizet, the Director of Technical and General Director of Environment and Nature Protection.
The workshop is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Environment, Ecology, and Climate, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the French Development Agency (AFD). Its primary objective is to enhance the national biodiversity strategy and action plan by incorporating environmental considerations more profoundly into the production sectors. Key activities include presenting the outcomes of an online survey on the prioritization of four IPPS, drafting guidelines for donor projects in each sector, and establishing a framework for designing IPPS that are biodiversity-conscious.
Representatives from the Ministry of Water and Forests expressed support for the workshop, emphasizing the importance of involving all relevant administrations during the formulation of the national biodiversity strategy. Nathalie Nyare Essima, the WWF country coordinator, underscored the critical need to integrate biodiversity into all human activities, particularly in the mining, forestry, and agricultural sectors.
This workshop is a component of the BIODEV2030 project, which is currently in its second phase (2023-2026). Funded by the AFD and implemented by WWF in Gabon, the project aims to promote sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
