LIBREVILLE, Gabon — René Morvan, a distinguished figure in Gabon’s political and aviation sectors, passed away on Sunday in Libreville at the age of 79, the Gabonese Press Agency (AGP) reported. Known affectionately as “Le Blanc de Ndolou, “Morvan’s contributions to Gabon’s civil aviation, territorial administration, and national representation have left an indelible mark on the nation.
Morvan’s career began in aviation, where he made history as the first Gabonese captain to fly a Boeing 747 for Air Gabon, the airline’s largest aircraft at the time. His leadership eventually led him to become the airline’s director general. Beyond his aviation achievements, Morvan’s political career was equally noteworthy. He was the first mayor of Mandji, the capital of the Ndolou department in the Ngounié province, and the first senator from the department, representing the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG).
