LAGOS — Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), is set to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that could significantly reshape Nigeria’s 2027 electoral landscape. Kwankwaso’s decision follows high-level negotiations with the ADC leadership, and he is expected to formally join the party in Kano today.
Kwankwaso’s resignation from the NNPP was a surprise to many, with sources revealing internal realignments within the party as not all key figures are willing to follow the former governor to his new political platform. ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, confirmed the move, emphasizing its potential to strengthen the opposition against the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The ADC has also expressed its commitment to adopting a consensus approach in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 polls, with National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stating that indirect primaries are no longer an option under the amended Electoral Act.
Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC is seen as a strategic move aimed at balancing power in the country and encouraging southern interests, a stance that contrasts with the Atiku group’s immediate rotation of the presidency. The ADC, according to Abdullahi, is facing a common threat from the APC and needs to unite opposition forces to save the country.
