Prince and Princess of Wales Welcome Nigerian President on Historic State Visit. London, United Kingdom — The Prince and Princess of Wales hosted President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his wife, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, at Windsor Castle on Wednesday morning, marking the first Nigerian state visit to the UK in 37 years.
The visit, which is a significant milestone in bilateral relations, comes amidst a backdrop of ongoing challenges in Nigeria, including a recent terror attack in Maiduguri that killed 23 people and injured over 100 others.
During their meeting, the Prince and Princess of Wales engaged with the Nigerian leaders, discussing a range of issues, including economic development, cultural ties, and the ongoing security situation in Nigeria.
On Thursday, President Tinubu is expected to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and members of the Nigerian community living abroad, as per the official schedule. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch, of Nigerian descent, has previously publicly criticized her country of origin over issues such as corruption and violence.
The last Nigerian state visit to the UK took place in 1989, although President Tinubu was received by Charles in September 2024. Nigeria remains a member of the Commonwealth, and the UK is home to a large Nigerian diaspora.
The visit comes a day after the coordinated blasts in Maiduguri, which have raised concerns about the security situation in the region.
Further details regarding the discussions and outcomes of the meetings are expected to be released in the coming days.
