Bamenda, Cameroon — As the anticipated visit of Pope Leo XIV draws near, Cameroon’s government has accelerated infrastructure upgrades in Bamenda. Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, recently inspected the progress of critical road projects essential for the papal tour scheduled for April.
Upon arrival in Bamenda, Minister Nganou Djoumessi was welcomed by local authorities and the Mayor of Bamenda, Mbigha Felix. He expressed satisfaction with the construction pace, particularly on the Bamenda urban crossing, while emphasizing the urgency of completing priority routes before the papal visit. “We have been instructed by the Head of State to ensure that the roads to be used during the Pope’s visit are ready before his arrival, “the minister stated.
Key among the projects is the stretch from Hospital Roundabout to St. Bless Bridge, which must be fully passable by April 10.
Contractors have been directed to intensify work schedules, especially during the rainy season. At the Regional Delegation of Public Works, stakeholders reviewed progress and outlined immediate interventions, including repairs on critical routes by BUNS Construction Company.
The minister also met with Andrew Nkea at the Bamenda Cathedral, emphasizing coordination between state authorities and the Catholic Church. He highlighted the need for public cooperation and assured that compensation measures are in place for affected residents. Authorities have identified about 30 individuals for relocation.
However, concerns have been raised about some residents who have not vacated the right of way, delaying construction. Minister Nganou Djoumessi also discussed broader road network improvements in the region, including the Ring Road and other projects supported by the African Development Bank.
The inspection concluded with renewed government commitments to deliver key road projects on time, ensuring Bamenda is ready for the significant religious visit.
